This August, Matosinhos, Portugal, will welcome The Ocean Race Europe for an unforgettable fly-by along its stunning Atlantic coastline. A city where the sea is both heritage and horizon, Matosinhos is the perfect stage for this iconic sailing event.
As part of the race, participating teams will stop at the Porto Cruise Terminal, a striking architectural landmark and one of the most important infrastructures at the Port of Leixões. Promoted by APDL – Administration of the Ports of Douro, Leixões, and Viana do Castelo – the terminal represents a unique model of territorial integration. It combines commercial efficiency with urban connectivity, enhancing both cruise tourism and community interaction. Its 340-meter quay, inaugurated in 2011, accommodates the world's largest vessels, transforming Leixões into a gateway to Northern Portugal.

Rooted in a deep maritime tradition and home to Portugal’s most important fishing port, Matosinhos blends ancient legacy with modern vibrancy. From the early settlement of Matesinus in the 11th century to its rise as a dynamic urban center, the city remains a beacon of cultural richness and coastal life.
Visitors can explore a unique mix of history and innovation—from the Sanctuary of Senhor Bom Jesus and the iconic Piscina das Marés by Álvaro Siza, to the energetic promenades, surf-ready beaches, and award-winning gastronomy that have earned Matosinhos a place among Portugal's top culinary destinations.
Whether you're savoring freshly grilled sardines, strolling the scenic walkways of Leça da Palmeira, or simply soaking up the view as world-class yachts glide past, Matosinhos offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience where tradition meets the sea and legends meet the future.
